History
The name of the Lords of Salers has been mentioned in important documents since the 11th century; proud knights who took part to the 1st and 7th Crusades. Under the protection of the castle, the small village prospered. Several times pillaged and ransomed, the inhabitants obtained the right to build ramparts around the high part of the village in 1428 and so could resist attacks from Protestants and Ligurians. The remaining gateways will remind you of the town’s defensive past. In 1666, Salers lost its castle razed to the ground by order of the King after the judgment of the Baron during the “Great Days of Auvergne”. That is why you can only see the site of the building today. The previous greatness of Salers found expression in the “Renaissance” architecture before the Bailliwick of the High Mountains of Auvergne was established. Salers became a judicial and administrative seat following the Edict of Henri II in 1550 but trade was the first wealth of Salers (wool, cheeses and mules). The Revolution ended the Bailliwick and the prosperity of the city simultaneously. From the main square with its mansions to more popular streets, do not forget to go to the church dedicated to Saint Mathew. Composite in style, inside a Holy Sepulchre dating from the 15th century and tapestries from the 17th century from FelletinAubusson workshops are worth the detour. At the extremity of the city, the Barrouze esplanade looks over the Maronne and the Aspre valleys with a view towards the Puy Violent.
